Humming Along
A first attempt to capture a few hummingbird photos. We have a feeder in the backyard, and while shooting with my Nikkor 50mm 1.4 D and tripod, was able to get close enough to not scare away this lone bird.
I obviously have some practicing to do - as I would have liked better lighting around the eye/neck area. But - as a first pass, this was a lot of fun! I have my eye on a 70-200mm 2.8 in the future, which will certainly help.

Ruby-Throated Hummingbird
I decided to try my luck with my in-camera flash on, and this is the result. I really like how the extra lighting shows off its eye, and captures the wings fluttering. With flash on, of course aperture needs to be set lower, and with this photo it is at f/8. But in aperture mode, the camera set its shutter speed to 1/125, which results in the fluttering wing action seen here.
Next time, my goal is to capture with this same or similar amount of light, but to get the wings to freeze. My plan is to shoot with flash on, manual mode, f/9, ISO 1600, and shutter speed at 1/2000 or higher to freeze the wings (similar to below). See the photo below which was taken a few frames before I decided to try this with my flash on.EXIF:

Broad-tailed Hummingbird
Another hummingbird photo (a female) from the same day as the last one. Basically just out of the camera with a lot of cropping.
Since posting the first, I found out that it’s been difficult to get the right light without using the flash, given that I have the feeder under a tree. I’ll keep practicing :)

Local Fledgling
Sometime near summer we suddenly had 3-4 fledglings around our yard. They were each shedding baby feathers and out making attempts to fly. We watched and cheered, hoping that each of the birds would make it to join their parents who watched over and fed them during this time of the year.
