Jumping For Joy
Our son jumps for joy as he runs back from making a goal during his game over the weekend. Take note parents - the first game I told him I’d pay him $1 for each goal he made, he made one goal. The second game, he made 2 goals for $2.00. $3.00 in one week for a 5 year old isn’t bad!
I’m hoping a little motivation/bribe increases his confidence, in addition to giving him a way to earn a little money since he can’t mow the lawn yet, and I don’t consider chores, i.e. things he should be doing anyways (making bed, cleaning room, etc) worthy of extra money outside of allowance. We have fun, and he seems to be having fun with it. After this photo he told me, “Call Mom and tell her I made another goal!”
Sunset Waves
I just can’t win. During Winter I dream of Hawaii, and when I’m in Hawaii, I’m dreaming of snow. Well, all I know is that I don’t want to leave these Sunset Waves behind. On a beautiful afternoon at Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore, surfers are carving it up, and I’m enjoying the time with the family playing in the water. I think I got it - I have the best of both worlds!

Sparkles
Just a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to hang with my 11 year old son and his scout troop up at a wonderful waterfall and hot springs. Well, I didn’t get enough, and came home so excited that I took the family up the next weekend.
We camped a night in our big family tent, hiked the 2.2 miles (or so) there and another 2.2 miles back to enjoy the waterfalls, the gorgeous scenery, and the hot springs.
Walking in the river, I bent down to get the camera low with the fisheye lens and snapped a few RAW/NEF photos. The water is refreshing (i.e. freezing) mainly, some places were boiling where the hot springs come out, and a few places, like the pool below, are just right. One of the best weekends replayed with the family - we’re sure spoiled here in Utah!

Continuing our Zion National Park weekend, one of our days we decided that we’d challenge Angels Landing - a hike which takes a lot of guts to complete. Angels Landing is a 5 mile hike which presents gorgeous views and dizzying drop-offs as you gain about 1488 feet of elevation and walk some portions along a 1200 foot sheer cliff.
Pictured here is another view of Zion Canyon - imagine this area all underwater, and then millions of years later, this green area below a lake bed. After the lake drained out, the Virgin River carved out the canyon which we see now. As part of the Grand Staircase of sedimentary rock, the oldest layer of Zion Canyon is the newest layer of rock in the Grand Canyon. Wow! What a progression!

Great-Great-Great Grandad
Last year (2009) the family association got together and had a monument of my great, great, great grandfather made, and placed in the “This is the Place Heritage Park” in Salt Lake City, UT, near Hogle Zoo. The location of the park is just inside the Salt Lake Valley, near Emigration Canyon where the Mormon pioneers trekked across the plains and made their way into what is now Salt Lake City in 1847.
If you haven’t had the chance to look up your genealogy yet, take a peek at FamilySearch.org, and put in a few names from way far back. Chances are there’s something on-record, and you may even be able to print out a pedigree chart!

Emerald Pool Falls
Looking West along the Kayenta Trail heading towards the Emerald Pools in National National Park, one can get a view of the three waterfalls which fill the Upper, Middle and Lower Pools.
It’s said that this trail is the third-most-used in Zion National Park, and I can see why. It is also just about 3 miles round trip - giving all level of hikers enjoyment along a less strenuous path.

Exploring Sundance
Early this summer, we took the kids up to Sundance Ski Resort to ride on the lift. It was a gorgeous evening, and had a blast riding together on Ray’s Lift.
